Originally a retailer of vacuums, Electrolux added refrigerators in 1925, washing machines in 1951, and dishwashers in 1959.
AB Electrolux (colloquially known as Electrolux) is a multinational appliance manufacturer headquartered in Stockholm. The company’s primary business consists of major appliances (refrigerators, stoves, dishwashers, washers, dryers, etc.) and vacuum cleaners for consumer use, as well as appliances for professional use.
Electrolux is a result of a merger from two companies - Lux AB, a maker of kerosene lamps for railroad stations, and Svenska Elektron AB, a vacuum sales company. The company sells their products under almost 50 different brand names, most of which were acquired through mergers and acquisitions. Though the company sells so many different product lines, Electrolux’s brand names are often regionally and geographically concentrated.
More recently, Electrolux bought General Electric’s Appliances unit for $3.3billion. This transaction is expected to double Electrolux’s business in North America. The sale was initiated in September 2014 and is expected to close sometime in 2015.
